Camden, Arkansas —Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) has been awarded a $5 million Higher Industry Readiness through Educational Development (HIRED) Grant to advance workforce training programs for Arkansas's defense industry.
The grant will enable SAU Tech to expand specialized programs in advanced manufacturing, automation, and systems integration, supporting current industry workers and preparing a skilled future workforce. By partnering with K-12 schools and employers, SAU Tech aims to build educational pathways that connect students and incumbent workers to high-demand careers in the defense sector.
“The HIRED Grant will help us bridge the skills gap in Arkansas’s defense industry,” said Dr. Jerry Thomas, Chancellor of SAU Tech. “We’re committed to supporting employers’ needs by preparing students and incumbent workers for jobs in our defense industry."
The HIRED funds will be used to upgrade classrooms and labs, providing state-of-the-art, hands-on training. These enhancements are designed to equip students and incumbent workers with the skills needed to excel in high-skill, high-demand jobs, reinforcing SAU Tech’s commitment to workforce development.
As part of its mission, SAU Tech remains dedicated to meeting the educational and training needs of the communities it serves.
